(Commentary): The Burnout Cycle: Finding My Way Back to the Game

Being burnt out and losing your way is a universal experience, yet when you’re in the middle of it, it feels incredibly isolating.

This post is a personal one. I haven’t blogged in a while because I’ve been navigating a season of significant change. I wanted to take this moment to clear my head, share my truth, and finally get back into the game.

Let’s be honest: I lost my momentum.

I lost my way, and I lost my consistency. Last week, burnout finally caught up with me, and I spent several days doing absolutely nothing. The habits that usually anchor me—journaling, meditation, studying—all fell by the wayside.

When I tried to force myself back into my routine, I realized I didn't even know what I was returning to. I lacked focus. I lacked a "why." I was drifting without a compass.

Perhaps it was the weight of recent professional and personal changes. I didn't manage the transition well, and without my usual systems in place, I spiraled into a familiar cycle: a burst of high productivity followed by a total crash.

How do we recover? How do we realign?

I believe the path back to ourselves is built on four essential pillars:

1. Time (Reflection)

Give yourself permission to pause. Reflect daily. Understand your situation without judgment. Be kind to yourself and forgive the "lost time." Instead of mourning the days you missed, focus on the clarity you gained from the rest.

2. Systems

We often burn out because our systems are either non-existent or too rigid. We might build a temporary routine that works for a week, but without a sustainable, strong system, our energy eventually evaporates. A system should support you, not drain you.

3. Goals

We need a "North Star"—a big, overarching goal—supported by small, daily wins. To avoid feeling overwhelmed, stop letting tasks pile up. Aim to finish what needs to be done today, so you can start tomorrow with a clean slate.

4. People

Surround yourself with people who fuel your ambition. The right community inspires the mind and nourishes the soul. You don't have to walk the path alone.

The 1% Rule

Life isn't easy, and no one has it all figured out. We all strive to become the best versions of ourselves, and it’s okay to lose the trail occasionally—as long as you find your way back.

My goal now is to improve by just 1% every day through these non-negotiables:

  • Study: At least 2 hours a day.
  • Movement: At least 30 minutes of exercise.
  • Reading: At least 15 minutes of a book.
  • Journaling: At least 4 lines to clear my mind.
  • Stillness: At least 10 minutes of meditation.

Believe that you are capable of more than you are today. Take one step forward. Most importantly, identify the habits holding you back and begin the work of letting them go—starting now.
