AI: Reaching true intelligence

We are probably at one of the most crucial moments of human history. Like the moments before final showdown between the Allies and Axis Power. The birth and death of Jesus.

AI might be the defining moment of the human race. How far we go? What decisions we make?

I have been reading and learning about AI for the past few months. This article is on my understanding and take on AI.

What is AI? What is Intelligence? Is AI truly an Intelligence? What is AGI? Can AI reach the level of true intelligence?

What is AI?

AI is the an branch/application of data science which mimics human cognitive functions by processing vast amounts of data to identify statistical patterns. At its core, an AI is a complex mathematical function. A network of billions of "weights" (learned patterns) that determine how input (a question) is transformed into output (like an answer).

So, is AI truly an intelligence? Before, we look at that, we need to understand on what is Intelligence.

What is Intelligence?

Intelligence is often defined as the ability to acquire and apply knowledge to solve problems, but human intelligence involves a critical component: neuroplasticity.

Human intelligence is dynamic; our brains physically change and reorganise in response to new experiences. We do not just process data; we reflect on it, correct our frameworks, and adapt to entirely novel situations with incomplete information. I

Intelligence, in the biological sense, is the capacity for growth and self-correction through a continuous feedback loop with the environment.

So, is AI truly intelligence?

As it currently is, I do not believe that AI is truly intelligent. The primary reason for this is the "Frozen weight" problem. Once an AI model is trained, its mathematical weights are fixed. While it can simulate conversation, it cannot "learn" or "grow" during the interaction. It lacks the ability to update its internal model in real-time. Thus, in its current form, I do not believe that AI is truly intelligence. It is a probabilistic prediction machine.

Can I AI become truly intelligent? What is AGI?

For AI to become a "true" intelligence, it would likely need to move beyond static models and into the realm of continual learning systems. To be able to updates its mathematical weights with every interaction, Update its own brain in real-time based on feedback.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is whereby an AI can perform any intellectual task that a human can. Unlike the "narrow AI," which excels at specific tasks, AGI would possess the ability to transfer knowledge across domains, exhibit common sense, and engage in autonomous reasoning. It is the next step in the AI revolution. But, it has its constraints.

Constraints for AI progress:

1. Compute scaling (Compute power real-time and advanced processing)

2. Energy efficiency (ability to be energy efficient to enable the compute)

3. Sensory Gap (a feedback loop with the physical world)

In conclusion:

While AI is a really exciting field, whether it will be a utility tool or a sentient being on its own cannot be foreseen now. However, I believe in 2 things:

1. The advancement in AI will bring great advancements in other fields of science & engineering

2. AI will change the job landscape of the world

3. AI can be a dangerous weapon on the wrong hands

4. When a AGI or ASI (Artificial Super Intelligence) is developed, the human history might come to an end

True intelligence may require not just the ability to process the universe, but the capacity to find meaning within it. The development of AI shows how complex and miraculous our own existence is.
